چکیده

Central Pacific (CP) and Eastern Pacific (EP) type ENSO events are inves-2 tigated using linear inverse modeling (LIM). Optimal initial conditions and growth 3 rates for CP or EP ENSO events are identified explicitly using a CP or EP ENSO 4 norm. The dominant difference in initial conditions that lead to CP and EP ENSO 5 events is the role of the second empirical orthogonal function of tropical sea sur-6 face temperature, which represents the Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM). Op-7 timal initial conditions for CP-type ENSO events include warm SST anomalies 8 in the central subtropical Pacific (a characteristic of the PMM) while optimal 9 initial conditions for EP-type ENSO events are focused in the eastern equato-10 rial Pacific and southern hemisphere subtropics along about 25 • S. Thermocline 11 anomalies differ in initial structures, and in their influence on SST for CP and 12 EP events. Results point to different roles of the PMM and thermocline vari-13 ations in the evolution of CP and EP ENSO events.

Further analysis of singular vector and ENSO predictability in the Lamont model—Part I: singular vector and the control factors

In this study, singular vector analysis was performed for the period from 1856 to 2003 using the latest Zebiak–Cane model version LDEO5. The singular vector, representing the optimal growth pattern of initial perturbations/errors, was obtained by perturbing the constructed tangent linear model of the Zebiak–Cane model. Variations in the singular vector and singular value, as a function of initi...

Modulation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation by ENSO: Inferences from Observations and GCM Simulations

The impact of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is studied, based on reanalysis data and output from an ensemble general circulation model (GCM) experiment. Observed monthly sea surface temperature variations over the period of 1950–99 are imposed in the deep tropical eastern/central Pacific in the course of the SST experiment. Both GCM, and reanalys...

El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO): A Review

The ENSO observing system in the tropical Pacific plays an important role in monitoring ENSO and helping improve the understanding and prediction of ENSO. Occurrence of ENSO has been explained as either a self-sustained and naturally oscillatory mode of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system or a stable mode triggered by stochastic forcing. In either case, ENSO involves the positive ocean-atmosphe...

Impact of Indo-Pacific Feedback Interactions on ENSO Dynamics Diagnosed Using Ensemble Climate Simulations

The impact of Indo-Pacific climate feedback on the dynamics of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated using an ensemble set of Indian Ocean decoupling experiments (DCPL), utilizing a millennial integration of a coupled climatemodel. It is found that eliminating air–sea interactions over the IndianOcean results in various degrees of ENSO amplification across DCPL simulations, with a...

An empirical model of tropical ocean dynamics

To extend the linear stochastically forced paradigm of tropical sea surface temperature (SST) variability to the subsurface ocean, a linear inverse model (LIM) is constructed from the simultaneous and 3-month lag covariances of observed 3-month running mean anomalies of SST, thermocline depth, and zonal wind stress. This LIM is then used to identify the empirically-determined linear dynamics wi...
